How it works
The HAA BACKSAVER is a simple attachment to existing gurneys. We designed it to overcome a common problem: gurneys do not rise high enough and can’t get close enough to meet the helicopter. The HAA BACKSAVER lifts the patient to the same level and extends outward to meet the helicopter deck. When every moment counts for the life of a patient, the HAA BACKSAVER makes it simple for HAA workers to move a patient quickly and safely.
No Hospital personnel needed for loading/unloading, especially during a “Hot Offload”, and “Hot Offload time is reduced to seconds so a following aircraft can get in quickly.
- Slide the deck outwards to the helicopter
- Use the normal gurney pedals to adjust the height
- Roll or slide stretcher onto BACKSAVER
- Attach or release the stretcher
- Slide the deck fully back
- Lower the gurney to a comfortable moving height

HAA PILOT'S IDEA. ENGINEER CREATED.

Three HAA and hospital personnel injuries were two too many. The HAA BACKSAVER began because one HAA pilot witnessed many crew member and hospital personnel suffer injuries on the job: from damaged knees to a devastating back injury.
That was enough.
The pilot decided, "There's gotta be a better way to do this."
He reached out to Johnston Engineering with his idea for the HAA BACKSAVER. On a napkin at a networking event, we sketched it out. After an extensive design and testing process, it's now FDA approved.
